Optical waveguides propagate light along a core where light is confined by a refractive index difference between the core and the cladding material. Waveguides are either single or multi-moded, depending on the number of propagating waveguide modes. Waveguide optics covers fiber optics, waveguides on planar substrates, and photonic integrated circuits (PICs) with their various waveguide components.
