Numerical design of AR, HR and other thin-film coatings
Reflection and transmission simulation for planar thin-film stacks
Details
FinnLight has the expertise and tools to design anti-reflection (AR), high-reflection (HR) and other coatings based on planar thin films and thin-film stacks. These coatings can be used in the input/output facets of lasers, waveguides, photodetectors and other components to obtain desired reflection and transmission spectra. Design is typically made for plane waves, but the results can also be applied to slowly diverging optical beams. In addition to in-house simulation software, there is also commercial simulation software available.
FilmWizard Software (Contact person: Mikko Harjanne, VTT, Espoo)
This software numerically calculates the transmission and reflection spectra of thin-film stacks for plane waves with a specified angle of incidence. Film Wizard™ Professional is a powerful, versatile, and user-friendly software package for thin film engineering. It combines optimization and synthesis design capabilities with powerful analytical tools for interpreting spectrophotometric and ellipsometric data, modeling of film layers, and performing regressions to determine actual thicknesses and indices of deposited layers. It allows to construct designs with up to 1000 discrete layers made of up to 26 different materials. Film Wizard™ incorporates five optical thin film synthesis methods to automate the design of optical coatings.

Essential McLeod Software (Contact person: Aki Mäyrä, VTT, Oulu)
The Essential Macleod software from Thin Film Center Inc. is a comprehensive software package for the design, analysis, manufacture and trouble shooting of thin film optical coatings. It can handle coatings from from single-layer antireflection coatings to demanding color separation beamsplitters, providing all that is necessary for their design, analysis, production planning and even reverse engineering of a failed production attempt. A wide range of performance parameters, from straightforward transmittance and reflectance to color coordinates in different color spaces, is built into the software. It can synthesize designs from scratch or refine existing ones, investigate errors and extract optical constants of film materials for use in designs. It consists of a Core that is its minimum configuration. The Core is supplemented by a number of optional Enhancements that extend the capabilities in various directions. The package has a progressive licensing system that controls the activation of the various enhancements. This permits fitting the configuration, and price, to the needs of the user.
