Design of waveguide coupling interfaces

In addition to light propagation inside the waveguide, it is often needed to design and simulate input/output coupling of light to/from waveguides. This can be done for waveguide-waveguide, waveguide-fiber and waveguide-to-free-space interfaces. Such coupling simulation can be done with fast and approximate methods, such as ray tracing, with semi-accurate methods, such as beam propagation simulation, or with rigorous methods, such a finite-difference-time-domain (FDTD). Available commercial software includes Lumerical FDTD, FimmWave mode solver and COMSOL.
